![]() ![]() While I think Jean has rarely looked prettier, I think the hazy lighting they use to achieve that doesn’t work because it’s the only time they ever do it. But the whole effect, he is laying his emotions as bare as he can tolerate all because he already knows he wants her to stay. I have always found the last part where he says he needs help and then described needing a blind eye, a talking to, etc to be a little sad, because he is basically hiring Jean to be his friend. For a brief and all too temporary moment they understand each other. His statement about how it won’t be like it was with his father is almost a confession of his flaws and I think serves to jump start their friendship. The scene in the bedroom where he asks her to stay, but is intimidated by her is so sweet. First, something about the way he looks when he goes into the kitchen, when he takes his hat off and looks down while the music plays - I don’t think in all the seasons he’s ever looked hotter. The twin scenes of Lucien in the bedroom and then in the hall are some of my favorites of the series. Agreed that Jean’s terror with the gun while still protecting her own was terrific. I’d like to know what caused him to become so devoted to Alderton in the first place. Hannam remains one of the more nuanced thugs on TV. I have trouble believing that they had his plot laid out so far in advance but who knows? Bringing those characters back after 3 seasons was brilliant, so maybe they knew what they were doing early on. It’s part of the process of them learning to live with each other and become friends.Īlderton. But for the first half of S1 they both end up having their antagonistic moments. He is short with Jean, and IIRC forgets what day the job interview is and asks her about it twice. His buying Cec a beer at the end shows that his hatred of the institution doesn’t blind him to appreciation of his fellow soldiers. His attitude towards the army stuff is bad but his feeling of betrayal towards the military are key to his character and many future episodes. I think he teases Cec but isn’t too mean. He’s harsh with that lady trying to get medicine because he rightfully suspects that she is trying to pull one over on him, and most of the time there isn’t a secret redeeming reason. I don’t think Lucien behaves as badly as all that (unlike later episodes in S1 and of course the first one). I look forward to you covering the episode where they test the water samples and each one has the same lonely paramecium floating in it.Īnyhow, this is one of my favorite episodes. I’ll have to find you the article about the medical consultant for the show, who is a Ballarat local. ![]() I think you can write a blog about that alone. ![]() the doctor blake mysteries doctor blake mysteries william munroįirst off, I loved science comment. Both Blake and Munro go out of their way to push each other’s buttons, to undermine and demean each other, and both act shocked when there are repercussions. His poor relationship with Blake is interesting because despite Munro’s failings as a living organism, it has everything to do with personality conflict and little to do with good vs. However he looks really good in a police uniform. And like so many competent tyrants before him, the rules are there to be enforced mercilessly on other people and then completely ignored when it suits you. Maybe a good fit for a city, less so for a “county” police police station. In a town where pretty much anyone will follow anyone else who wields the tiniest amount of power, Munro still finds the need to be cruel and autocratic. Much like Joy or Mei Lin, you may like him or hate him (I hate him), but no one can forget him. A man of many motivations and only one facial expression. ![]()
